Joseph “Marty” Welsh, 51 of Cedar Rapids, died unexpectedly of a heart attack, Monday, May 4, 2009, in his home. Services: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2009, at St. Pius Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Donald Klein. Family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2009, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where a scripture service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his significant other, Reta Schwartz; his mother, Sally Welsh of Swisher; his children, Callie Welsh and fiancé Seth Moomey of Marion, Amy Welsh and fiancé Robert Doss of Cedar Rapids, Lisa Welsh of Marion, Megan Schwartz of Cedar Falls and Rachel Schwartz of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Kylie Doss, Chase Welsh, Avery Moomey and Amaya Doss; two brothers, Pat (Kathy) Welsh of Robins and Mike (Becky) Welsh of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Karen (Dan) Solt of Parker, Colorado; an aunt, Elaine Waters of Oelwein; and two uncles, Lyle (B) Welsh of Kearns, Utah, and Mike Corrigan of Lake City, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his father, Carroll; an uncle, Donald Welsh; and three aunts.
Marty was born September 3, 1957, the son of Carroll and Sally (Danaher) Welsh, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A 1975 Prairie High School graduate, he started in the pipefitting trade in October of 1977 with Modern Piping. Marty loved sports. He was an ASA Softball coach, Little League Coach and an avid golfer. Marty enjoyed watching the Bears, Cubs, Hawkeyes and Bulls. His greatest love was spending time with Reta, his children, his grandchildren and his mother and father.
Marty was a loving man who had a contagious laugh. He always put others first and was a devoted son, father, grandfather and friend. He was helpful, generous, charming and hardworking. He enjoyed singing and was a great dancer. There were no strangers to Marty, only friends.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of Marty.
