Joseph R. Karge, 77, Marion, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 18, 2005, in St. Lukes Hospital, Cedar Rapids, due to complications of lung surgery. Services: 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 21, 2005, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 520 Wilson Avenue S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Pastor Joseph R. Karge, Jr. will officiate at the service. Friends may call from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 20, 2005, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, 520 Wilson Avenue S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with military honors.
Survivors include his children, Karen King and her husband, Dr. Malcolm King of Ashland, Kentucky; his son, Pastor Joseph R. Karge, Jr., Mayor of Woodward, Iowa and his wife, Jody Karge of Woodward, Iowa; four grandchildren, Hannah and Scott King, and Kristofer and Daniel Logue; great-grandson, Coleton Michael Logue; and longtime friend, Mary Fritts. He is also survived by his children?s mother, Velma Schope.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Arabella Karge; eight brothers, Howard Jr., Samuel, William, Albert, James, Leonard, Lawrence, Elmer; and an infant sister.
Joseph was born September 4, 1928, in Camden, New Jersey. In June of 1947, he graduated from Burlington High School in Burlington, New Jersey. The following year he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Following his basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas, he attended the Radio Mechanics School at Scott AFB located near Belleville, Illinois. In June of 1951, he married Velma Linenfelser of Alhambra, Illinois, and together they later raised their two children near Martelle and Morley, Iowa.
However, after completion of his military service in April of 1952, he attended the University of Illinois at Urbana, Illinois, where he received his bachelor?s degree in the field of electrical engineering (1974). He was divorced in 1976. He worked for many years as an electrical engineer at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and in September of 1998, he retired from the Defense Contract Management in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
From 1978 until the time of his death, Joseph was a member of the United States Roller Sports of America, where he was a judge and referee for many contests, and where he skated competitively with Mary Fritts in the Esquire Division for a number of years. He was an Achievement Test Judge for the Roller Skating Association of America and a contest judge and referee for USA Roller Sports of America. He was also Treasurer of Skate Country Club, an artistic skating club in Cedar Rapids, Davenport, and Cedar Falls, Iowa. Other interests included swimming, biking, walking at the mall, the gym, and ice skating.
