Joseph Roman Thome, 78, of Cedar Rapids, and formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, April 24, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics following a fall which resulted in severe head injuries. Funeral Mass: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. The family will greet friends 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, where a vigil service begins at 6:30 p.m. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors.
He was born July 28, 1930, in Stacyville, Iowa, the son of Joe and Rosina (Faas) Thome.
Joe attended Meyer Consolidated and Stacyville Schools and served in the U.S. Navy from October 1950 until July 1954. Joe and Arlene Hartogh married on September 27, 1955, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma. They made their home in Waterloo for over 49 years, having moved to Cedar Rapids in 2004.
Joe retired from Rath Packing Company after 30 years of service and from Schwans after 8 years. Joe also worked for two generations of the Pollock family on their farms and for Riley’s Flooring. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in both Waterloo and Marion and the American Legion in Stacyville.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers-in-law: Gene Mayer and Larry Hayungs.
Joe is survived by his wife: Arlene; three daughters: Rhonda (David) Zoz of Lakeville MN, Karla (Kevin Sura) Pitts of Shakopee, MN, Brenda (Rob) Zimmerly of Independence; three sons: Mike (Sandra) of Cedar Rapids, Nick (Brenda Hill) of Louisville, KY, Craig of International Falls, MN. Nine grandchildren: Jennifer (Mike) Weckman, Jaclyn and Zachary Pitts, Joseph, (fiancee Nichole) Jenna, Kristine and Katelyn Zoz, Nathanael and Caroline Thome. Two brothers: Ralph (Mildred) of Osage, Ben (Mary) of Adams, MN and 5 sisters: Mary (Tony) Young of Garner, Marjorie Mayer of Stacyville, Imelda (Vernon) Mayer of Stacyville, Lorena (Raymond) Pannhoff of Ventura, and Emilie (Wayne) Gerlock Carterville, IL. Many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial in Joe’s memory may be directed to either: Prairiewoods, Sisters of Mercy Convent, or Knights of Columbus #5390 of Marion.
