Joseph A. “Joe” Sanfilippo, 84, of Dundee died Wednesday, February 1, 2012.

Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 6, 2012 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester by Rev. John Flaherty. Visitation: 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., Sunday, February 5, 2012 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester with a Parish Scripture Service at 4:00 p.m.; additional visitation 1 hr. prior to services at the church. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum, Cedar Rapids.

Joe was born August 5, 1927 in Bronx, New York, the son of Salvator and Mildred (Marino) Sanfilippo. On June 29, 1952, Joe was united in marriage to Sandy T. Sgandurra at the Our Lady of Assumption Church in Bronx, N.Y. He owned and operated his own electronics and communication business in the Bronx before moving to Iowa in 1981 settling in the Backbone State Park area.

Joe served in the United States Army and the United States Air Force. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, VFW, and the Lamont American Legion. Joe and his wife Sandy were very involved in the Friends of the Backbone State Park, receiving a commendation for their work from Gov. Tom Vilsack. Joe enjoyed collecting trains.

Joe is survived by three children; Michael T. Sanfilippo, Joe (Dolores) Sanfilippo, and David B. (JoAnne) Sanfilippo; five grandchildren, Paul, Mark, Matthew, Amanda, and Brian; in-laws, Carol Sanfilippo, Anthony (Rosalie) Sgandurra, Lena (Michael) DiMartino, and Millie Sgandurra.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Sandy Sanfilippo in 2010; his parents; a brother, Pete Sanfilippo and a brother in-law, Lou Sgandurra.

Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Friends of the Backbone State Park.
