Joseph Cheatham, 59, of Hiawatha, died at his home on Thursday, August 29, 2013, after battling lung cancer. A celebration of life from 11-4 p.m. at Ellis Overlook Pavilion, Cedar Rapids, with a slide show and family share time at 1:00 p.m. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.
Joseph was born on November 4, 1953, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Clifford & Virginia (Ferguson) Cheatham. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1971 and Kirkwood Community College in 1973 with a degree in Lithography and Printing. Joseph worked at Collins Radio, Wagners Printing until it closed and as of late, was with Cedar Graphics.
As a young man, Joseph worked for the Rock Island Railroad and developed a love of trains. He collected model railroad trains and enjoyed watching passing trains. He was a softball player in 1980’s and a bass player for many local bands over the years. He also loved his friends at the club.
Joseph is survived by his three sons, Ted (Angela) Johnson-Cheatham of Mechanicsville, Christian Johnson-Cheatham and Patrick (Morgan) Johnson-Cheatham, all of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren, Maria and Finnegan; and a sister, Barb (Rocky) Kline of Oklahoma.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford & Virginia Cheatham and two sisters, Carolyn Merfeld and Dena Clark.
