John Lewis Talley, 76, of Marion, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 25, 2021, at his home surrounded by his loving family. In agreement with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Inurnment will take place at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City, Iowa. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion is assisting the family.
John was born on February 25, 1944, in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of Harry and Clara (Travis) Talley. He graduated from Monmouth High School and then attended the American Floral Arts School in Chicago. John proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. On October 21, 1967, in Monmouth, Illinois, he was united in marriage to Lillian Joyce Ray. John was owner/operator of Blairs Flowers and Gifts until retiring in 2004. He was a member of Marion Christian Church, the Marion American Legion Post #298, Evening Lions Club, VVA Chapter 568, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 53 years, Joyce Talley; two daughters, Jennifer (Robert) Tucker and Joy Talley; grandson, Zaine Talley; step-grandson, Hunter Tucker; siblings, Jerry L. Talley, Katherine M. Parker, James E. Talley, Melvin L. Talley, Donna R. Sheese, Dixie D. Reimolds, Harry E. Talley, Jr., Lionel W. Talley, and Mary A. Cole; and his beloved dogs, Gypsy and Clara
John was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Jerry Jim, Melvin and Harry.
Memorials in John’s memory may be directed to the Marion Christian Church at 1050 McGowan Blvd, Marion, Iowa 52302.
He will always pluck my heartstrings, tickle my funny bone, and raise my consciousness, opening my heart and eyes to always think differently and challenge the world to be different too. A Vietnam veteran and hero, a fighter and lover to the end… I salute you, dear Uncle – Suzanne. Our family has been so overwhelmed by many of these thoughtful tributes.
