John Howard Stone, 72, of Central City, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 21, 2003, in his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, October 25, 2003, at Zion Presbyterian Church in Coggon, Iowa, by the Rev. Ron Lewis. Friends may call at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City, from 3 - 8 p.m. Friday (Oct. 24). Burial: Mt. Clark Cemetery, Central City, with military rites by Coggon American Legion Post No. 362.

Survivors include his wife, Joan; his children, Carol (Doug) Frank of Kirkland, Washington, Karen Stone of Hiawatha, Kathryn (Kevin) Holub of Mt. Vernon, Nancy (Roger) Craig of Clermont, Julie (Tom) Silver of Marion and Steven (Roxanne) Stone of Vinton; thirteen grandchildren, Bradley Steckel, Kyle and Kane Holub, Nicole, Natalie, Janelle and Connor Craig, Joshua, Jenna, Jonathan and Jill Silver and Valerie and Shannon Stone; and a sister, Marjorie Andersen and Ervin Lee of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Douglas Allan Stone and a sister, Ruth Elaine Stone, both of whom died in infancy.

John was born the son of Howard and Florence Buhrman Stone on July 27, 1931, in Cedar Rapids. He was united in marriage to Joan M. Grimm on September 17, 1954, in Manchester, Iowa. John served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a farmer, worked at FMC for twenty years and was with the Linn County Road Department for fourteen years. John served with the North Linn Ambulance Service for fourteen years and was an officer of the Coggon Opera House Arts Council. He was a leader of the Delaware County 4-H Club; a member of the Coggon Brass Band; and a Mercy Hospice volunteer. A member of Zion Presbyterian Church in Coggon for over fifty years, John served as elder, Sunday School teacher and was a former moderator of the East Iowa Presbytery in 1984. John served on the board and was a counselor for many years at Camp Wyoming in Wyoming, Iowa.

Johns? special interests included music (singing baritone), massage, love of animals, horticulture and helping those in need as a community volunteer.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in John?s memory.
