John J. Sevcik, 71, of Cedar Rapids and Sun City West, Arizona, died Friday, September 30, 2011, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 4, 2011, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Co-Celebrants Father David Beckman and Father Jim Brokman. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, October 3, 2011, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Karen; his children, Lori (Michael) Hubsmith of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Lisa Schafer of Madison, Wisconsin, and Brad (Denise) Sevcik of Robins, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Maddie, Ellie, Luke and Sophie Schafer, Macey, Abby and Jake Sevcik; two stepgrandchildren, Peter and Kevin Hubsmith; and his in-laws, Mary and Mark McConaughy and their children, Mary Kate McConaughy and Marianne (Troy) Gersema.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
John was born December 11, 1939, the son of Joseph and Hazel (McHugh) Sevcik, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A 1957 graduate from Wilson High School, he entered the National Guard in 1963, where he served for six years. On January 23, 1965, John was united in marriage to Karen K. Tosh at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. He worked as a traffic signal engineer for the City of Cedar Rapids and was involved with the Duane Arnold Energy Plant during the building phase. John then worked at ESCO Electric of Marion, retiring in 2003 as an electrical foreman.
John enjoyed ham radio, computers and being a member of the Sundancers in Arizona who worked with the pro M. L. B. Spring Training Camps. He was a member of the volunteer electricians group that formed to help rewire many homes after the 2008 flood in Cedar Rapids.
He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, Cedar Valley Amateur Radio Club, Electrical Union IBEW Local 405 and Sun City West Computer Club.
