John Edward Schwiebert, 72, of 22 Aloha Drive, Hiawatha, formerly of Center Point, died Friday, June 26, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a sudden illness. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, by Rev. Karen Nelson. The family will greet friends 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at the funeral home. Private family inurnment to take place at the Brooklyn I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Brooklyn, Iowa, with Masonic Honors.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ann, of 53 years; daughter, Susan (Larry) Wear of Center Point; son, Jeff (Deb) Schwiebert of Mt. Vernon; honorary son, Joseph (Beth) Kalimba of Columbia, Missouri; five grandchildren, Nathan (Anne) Wear, Seth (Jenna Fuller) Wear, Aaron (Lisa) Schwiebert, Lindsey (Matt) Starmer, and Allie Schwiebert; and two great-grandchildren, Rhyse and Lauryn Wear. Also surviving are his sister, Pat (Ken) Sutten of Marshalltown; and two brothers, David (Mary Ann) Schwiebert of Brooklyn, and Jim (Barb) Schwiebert of Brooklyn.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
John was born August 24, 1936, to C.H. and Vera (Anger) Schwiebert in Brooklyn, Iowa. He was a graduate of Brooklyn High School with the Class of 1954. John was married to Ruth Ann Montgomery on August 21, 1955, in Brooklyn. He then earned his undergraduate degree from Drake University in 1958, and his MA from the University of Iowa in 1969. John coached and taught at New Sharon and Iowa Valley early in his career, and was in the FBI from 1962-1966. From 1970, until his retirement in 1983, he was the Superintendent for the Center Point Community School District. He coached for several years after his retirement at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon. John was a lifelong educator and coach, and was a goodwill ambassador for youth sports at both a local and international level. He was an avid genealogist and historian, especially involving basketball in the state of Iowa.
John was a member of Center Point United Methodist Church, Ex-FBI Agents of Eastern Iowa (and national), and supported multiple school booster clubs including Center Point, Mt. Vernon, and Iowa City. John was a 50-year Mason and a member of Corinthian Masonic Lodge #174 AF & AM of Brooklyn, Cedar Rapids Scottish Rite, and El Kahir Shrine of Cedar Rapids.
John touched many lives, never met a stranger, and generously gave of his time and talents. He was happiest when coaching kids of all ages. John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who dearly loved his family.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in John’s memory.
