John D. Sage, 82, of Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center, Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, February 8, 2004, at the care center, following a long illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 11, 2004, at St. Ludmila?s Catholic Church, by the Rev. Tom McDermott. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m., Tuesday, February 10, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids where a scripture wake service will be recited at 7 p.m., with military rites. Burial: St. John?s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include Rose Sage of Monticello; his daughters, Connnie Gredes and husband Phil of Monticello, Rosemary Oldorf and husband Larry of Cedar Rapids, Beverly Howard and husband Dwight of Hiawatha, and Susan Welp and husband Jeff of Fallbrook, California; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Smitkamp and Louise Rathburn; two sister-in-laws, Mary Sage and MaeBelle Beigo; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, John D. Jr. and thirteen brothers and sisters.
John was born February 21, 1921, in Cedar Rapids, the son of John F. and Laura (Hoffman) Sage. He graduated from Wilson High School where he was an outstanding football player and played on an All State Team. In 1939, he was honored with All-State Honors. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a 2nd Class Petty Officer. He married Rose Philipp on March 9, 1942. John worked for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department for 27 years, retiring as a captain. He then worked for the Cedar Rapids School Board for five years.
