John Christian Randles, 59, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 15, 2023. A visitation will be held from 4 - 7 p.m. on Monday, April 24, 2023, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at the church. Burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids is assisting the family.

John was born on June 2, 1963, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Bruno and Suzanne (Orth) Randles. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Prairie High School in 1981 and then attended UNI, later earning his graduate degree in school administration. John embarked on a fulfilling career in teaching at Prairie which spanned 30+ years. John was a dedicated educator that touched the countless lives of students. He was a teacher, mentor, role model, and friend for his students whether the classroom, on the multiple trips to Washington DC, weeks at camp, or during numerous events. He had a unique ability to connect with students of all ages, inspiring them to learn and grow.

John became the familiar and beloved voice in announcing sporting events in the community and across the state. He graced the airwaves and captured the hearts of sports fans with his distinctive style, in-depth knowledge, and unwavering enthusiasm for the games and events he announced. He brought to life thrilling moments and memorable plays. John was more than just a voice behind the microphone, he was known for his patience, kindness, smile, and unwavering commitment to helping others succeed. Retiring in 2022, his lifelong passion for the classroom, the school, and announcing events kept him active at Prairie until his passing.

John was a proud brother uncle, great-uncle, and great-great-uncle, he made family gatherings special with his warm presence and intentional ability to connect with his many nieces and nephews. He enjoyed many trips across many states to visit and to embrace experiences that touched the lives of those he loved.

John is survived by his siblings, Dave (Jean) in Seattle, Washington, Joe (Steve Makowski) in New Hope, Pennsylvania, Vince (Maria) in Cedar Rapids, Mark (Helen) in Pueblo, Colorado, Peter (Barb) in Fulshear, Texas, sister-in-law, Kris in Cedar Rapids, Paul (Sylvia) in Texas, and Julia (Craig) Kulish in Center Point, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; and his special extension of family, the Hardin’s.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Rachael (Randles) and Dennis Hromidko; and brother, Bill Randles.

The family extends a special thank you to the Prairie Hawk Community for the love, memories and support that has been shared with John over the many years.
