John Richard Oxley, 77, of 2266 Oxley Road, Marion, died Monday, May 10, 2004, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, May 13, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by the Rev. Melisa Bracht-Wagner. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military rites. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 - 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Survivors include his nephew Ralph (Laurie) Oxley and their children, Breanna, Brittney and Braden of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; a niece JoAnne (Darrell) Oxley-Draper of Omaha, Nebraska; and a sister-in-law, Jean Liabo Oxley of Marion.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Myron "Mike? Oxley.

John was born October 1, 1926, in Marion Township, the son of Ralph and Mary Johnson Oxley. John was a captain with the University of Iowa cross country team and a three-time letter winner in varsity track and cross-country. He was an Iowa State champion in the mile, holding the state record for many years. He also held the fastest record in the mile while in the Navy at the Great Lakes. He served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

In 1943, John showed the Grand Champion steer at the Iowa State Fair. His steer was the Reserve Grand Champion at the Chicago International. John and his brother, Myron raised and fed black cattle on their farm east of Marion. The farm has been in the family since 1838, when it was purchased by a land patent from Dubuque.
