John Conrad Nefzger, 83, of Earlville, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at his home. A Vigil Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2023, at Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home in Earlville, where visitation will follow until 8 p.m. An additional visitation will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at the Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Reverend Gabriel Mensah officiating. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Earlville, with Military Honors. Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Earlville is in charge of arrangements.

John was born on December 28, 1939, at home in Delhi, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Kathryn (Bonert) Nefzger. He attended Delhi Consolidated School. John enlisted into the army and was stationed in Germany, where he proudly served our country. John married Margaret “Peg” Leytem on July 24, 1965, at Immaculate Conception Church in Sand Springs, Iowa, four children were born to this union. John was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earlville; his faith was very important to him. He and Peg farmed north of Earlville, where they raised their family. Farming was his passion and enjoyed working around the farm, driving around the countryside checking the crops, and having coffee and rolls in the morning with his brothers. Most of all, he loved spending time with family and friends, especially the grandchildren who he talked to every night. John loved getting together on Sundays with the family, he will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

John is survived and lovingly remembered by his children, Rodney (Connie) Nefzger, Patti (Gary) Hoeger, both of Earlville, Brian Nefzger (Lori Fowlkes) of Dyersville, Brenda (Terry) Elgin of Earlville; grandchildren, Heather (Jared) Grover, Harley (Mandy) Nefzger, Holly (Jeff) Chesnut, Heidi Hoeger (fiancé, Jeremy Putz ), Chris Hoeger (Caitlin Schuman), Trevor Elgin (Maggie McGrane), Brooke Elgin, and Trista Elgin; three great-grandchildren, Kaela, Kylie, and Lukas Chesnut; siblings, Theresa Boge of Earlville, Jim (Lillian) Nefzger of Delhi, Allie Nefzger of Earlville, Jerry (Susan) Nefzger of Delhi, and Mary Kay Turnis of Manchester; and in-laws, John Leytem, Jennifer (Don) Felton both of Hopkinton, and Kim (Roger) Hunt of Earlville, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Kathryn Nefzger; his wife, Peg Nefzger; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Albert and Hilda Leytem; two brothers-in-law, Phil Turnis and Jim Boge; and sister-in-law, Jane Leytem.
