John Fredrick McGranahan, 85, of 4024 Northwood Dr. NE, died Saturday, May 19, 2007, at St. Luke's Hospital, following a sudden illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial: Mound Cemetery, Norway.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Cedar Rapids and a daughter, Sara McGranahan (Tyler Davisson) of Calamus.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

John was born July 29, 1921, in Newhall. He graduated from Coe College and Iowa State University. On September 29, 1973, he married Barbara Witt. He served twenty years as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force and reserves. John worked at Iowa Steel as a structural engineer for thirty years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cedar Rapids.

John bred, owned, and showed American Saddlebred horses for thirty-five years, memorable horses include; Orchid Heights Rambling Rose, Champagne Mac, Midwest Express, and Champagne Score. In retirement he was an avid gardener and photographer.

A memorial fund has been established in John's memory.
