John A. McFarlane, Jr., 56, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, December 13, 2008, in Maquoketa. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 18, 2008, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids by Father Mark Osterhaus. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion where a vigil service will begin at 6:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, at a later date.

Survivors include his wife Natalie (Luerkens) McFarlane of Cedar Rapids; his daughter, Amanda McFarlane of Iowa City; his son, Chase McFarlane at home; his father, Dr. John (Janet) McFarlane of Sioux City; his mother, Norma Jean McFarlane and Paul Hedgepeth of San Diego, California; his sister, Sally (Dean) McFarlane-Parrott of Kansas City, Missouri; his brother, Ernie (Robin) McFarlane of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and many extended family members.

John was born June 2, 1952, the son of John and Norma Jean (Smith) McFarlane in Topeka, Kansas. He worked at Brad Deery in Maquoketa. He was a great outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and being outside. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his children. He was very passionate about life and lived it to the fullest.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and a special uncle, Don Smith from whom he learned his great story telling abilities.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for his children’s education.
