John A. Kooreman, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, July 14, 2005 at Cottage Grove Place of complications from a longstanding illness. Services: 12:00 noon Monday, July 18, 2005, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids by Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer. Burial: Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids with military honors. The family will greet friends two hours prior to services on Monday at the church. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion is in charge of arrangements.
His family includes his wife, Bernus Pirkl Kooreman; a daughter, Linda K. Romano and husband Pat and two grandchildren, Michelle and Patrick, all of Peoria, Illinois; and one niece and one nephew.
Mr. Kooreman was born on July 24, 1914, in the town of Alton, Iowa, to William and Magdalene Stronks Kooreman. He graduated from Central College in 1935 and Iowa State University in 1939 with a degree in chemical engineering. He was employed by Penick and Ford LTD in June of 1939, and retired in March of 1977, as food industry manager. During that period, he served in the U.S. Navy from April 1942 to December 1945. In connection with his job at Penick and Ford, he was active in trade association work concerning the technical aspects relating to the development, servicing and marketing of the company?s products. He served on the Technical Service Committee of the Corn Refiners Association; was a member of the Institute of Food Technologists; served on the quality control advisory committee and was director of the National Preservers Association; was president of the American Association of Candy Technologists, for which he received the Stroud Jordan Award and was recognized with an Award of Merit by the National Confectioners Association. He was also a member of the Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, Elmcrest Country Club, and St. Paul?s United Methodist Church.

The family would like to acknowledge the love and excellent care that John received throughout his residency from the staff at Cottage Grove place, and also for the gracious assistance that he has received through Amenity Hospice.
Military honors will be provided by American Legion Hanford Post #5 of Cedar Rapids.
