John E. Hoyle, Sr., 80, of 1511 9th Street S.W., Cedar Rapids, died Friday, July 22, in St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids from cancer. Services: 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, by the Rev. Bill Harnish. The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Doris; two daughters, Linda Johnston and Connie (John) Seegers, both of Cedar Rapids; a son John E. (Mona) Hoyle, Jr. of Kentucky; a brother, Lloyd (Jo) Hoyle of Louisiana; and a sister, Peg Guetzko of Cedar Rapids.

Also surviving are five grandchildren, Cory John (Cami) Pierce, Kevin Scott (Liane) Schulte, Kristine (Bruce) Spurgeon, Nicole Hoyle, and Travis Hoyle; three great-grandchildren, Alex Pierce, Haley Spurgeon, and William Schulte. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Gertrude Hoyle and Clara Adkinson; and three brothers, Dwight Hoyle, Everett Hoyle and Lawrence (Red) Hoyle.

John was born the son of Lloyd and Ethel Daisy (Wagner) Hoyle on June 19, 1925, in Ainsworth, Iowa. On January 13, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, he was united in marriage to Doris Wilford. He served in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict. John was a foreman at the Anamosa Reformatory in license plates.

He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed woodworking, leatherwork, and was an artist who loved to dance.
