John M. Howe, Jr., 88, of Marion, most recently of Promise House in Hiawatha, died of natural causes at Mercy Medical Center on January 29th, 2007. A celebration of his life will be held at the Marion First Baptist Church on Thursday, February 1, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. to be followed by a luncheon. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.
He is survived by two brothers, Arlen and L.C. Howe, of Central City; two sisters, Donna Schellin of Marion and Mary Frye of Stevens Point, Wisconsin; three children, Jon (Jackie) Howe of Livermore, Colorado, Gordon (Cindy) Howe of Marion, and Helen (Pete) Betancur of Taylor, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Howe was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa, who died in April, 2005.
Mr. Howe was born on the family farm in Marion on October 6, 1918, to Ethelyn Faye (Goodyear) and John M. Howe, the first of ten children. He graduated from Marion High School in 1939, and joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. In the early days of the war he was married to Theresa Farley in Kahoka, Missouri, on April 4, 1942. Both John and Theresa served their country during WWII. John was stationed in India with the China-Burma-India wing of the Air Transport Command, where he supervised aircraft maintenance operations.
After the war, Mr. Howe worked at Universal (Pettibone), then as co-owner and operator of the Howe-Travis service station in Marion. He later spent thirty-five years working as a skilled flooring craftsman with Richard Alexander at the Woodshed, until his retirement. For most of his life, he remained an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and fisherman. He was a life-long member of the Marion First Baptist Church.
