John Robert Horton, 79, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Meadow View Memory Care Village, Cedar Rapids, following a long illness. Services: 10:30 Monday, March 23, 2009, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Jonathan Offt. The family will greet friends from 3:30 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2009, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 53 years, Marlene; his children, Jay (Allison Kave) Horton of Brooklyn, New York, and Dee Ann (John) Warren of North Liberty; and two grandchildren, Clay and Jonah Warren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd; his mother, Maxine Lee; stepfather, Robert Lee; and a sister, Kathryn Calderbank.
John was born April 25, 1929, the son of Floyd and Maxine (Strayer) Horton, in Estherville, Iowa. A 1947 graduate from Roosevelt High School in Estherville, he attended Estherville Junior College and then served his country with the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict as a Staff Sergeant. On June 9, 1956, John was united in marriage to Marlene Rammelsberg in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.S.C. degree in 1956. John worked for Western Fraternal Life Insurance, retiring in 1994, after 17 years of service.
John was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. He was President of Iowa Fraternal Congress and the Iowa Chapter of Fraternal Insurance Counselors. John enjoyed woodworking, tennis, swimming and bird watching.
