John G. Fields, 67, of 3507 Bel Air Dr. SE, Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, February 24, 2008, at the University of Iowa Hospital & Clinic, Iowa City, following a sudden accident. The family will greet friends and family from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, February 28, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with the Memorial Service following. Inurnment: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his loving wife, Dorothy; his children, Carmen Fields, Valerie Hayes, (Jim Greene), Christine Schulte, all of Cedar Rapids, and Vicki Fields of Chillicothe, Missouri; five grandchildren, Emilly (Brian) Davis of Marion, Ashley O’Neal, Chelsey Hayes, Aaron Schulte, and Myriah Fields, all of Cedar Rapids; three great-grandchildren, Dylan Davis, Cameron O’Neal and Kaleya Mercer; his brother, Jeffrey A. (Willie) Fields and sisters, L. Jean Carroll, Joyce Lefebure, both of Cedar Rapids and Julie (Jim) Rollyson of Forest City, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Melvin Christopherson.
John was born February 16, 1941, to the proud parents of Almond Roy and Nellie A. Fields, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He served in the United States Navy. On October 26, 1962, John was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Feuerhelm for a very wonderful 45 years. He worked for Quaker Oats for 28 years, and then worked for PMX for 15 years, retiring in March of 2007.
John enjoyed playing and watching golf, was an avid reader, enjoyed all kinds of music, and spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren. He was a former member of the Eagles Club and was a current member of the American Legion Post #5.
John was the best husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend you would ever want.
