John L. Doonan, 83, of 3824 Vine Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, June 4, 2004, at St. Luke?s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at St. James United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Susan Detwiler. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Center Point Cemetery, Center Point.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mary Claire; his children, Tim (Nancy) Doonan of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Barbara (Tom) O?Brien of Big Rapids, Michigan, and Brian Doonan of Scottsdale, Arizona; six grandchildren, Andrew and Elizabeth Doonan, Adam and Michael O?Brien; Jessica and Mike Doonan; four sisters, Jane Nelson, Mae Ferguson, Ruth Mortland and Celia Hartz; a brother, Clarence Doonan; and several nieces and nephews.

John was born February 26, 1921, the son of John and Flora Doonan, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He served his country as an Army World War II veteran. On May 5, 1946, John was united in marriage to Mary Claire Smith. He was formerly employed at Borden Company and retired from F.M.C. in 1983. An active member of St. James United Methodist Church, John enjoyed golfing, gardening and cheering for his St. Louis Cardinals.
