John Detweiler, 82, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, January 28, 2013. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 2, 2013, at All Saints Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids by Rev. John R. Flaherty. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the church where a vigil service will begin at 4:00 p.m. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 298 of Marion. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.
Survivors include three sons, Ronald (Peggy) Detweiler, Michael (Kay) Detweiler, and Gregory Detweiler; five grandchildren, Benjamin, Krystal, Zachary, Annie, and Ellie; two great-grandchildren, Everett Parker and Aiden Detweiler; four sisters, Alice Miller of Spartansburg, Pennsylvania, Edie Detweiler of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Edna Breniser of Middlebury, Indiana, and Cora Miller of Goshen, Indiana; and two sisters-in-law, Alta Detweiler of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania and Florence Detweiler of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Anna Detweiler; his wife, Eldora; a granddaughter, Carrie; three brothers, Sollie, Leroy, and Raymond; and five sisters, Irene, Martha, and Ann Detweiler, Dee Sherman, and Mable Miller.
John was born March 9, 1930, in Wellman, the son of Benjamin and Anna (Miller) Detweiler. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, spending 3 years in Alaska and was honorably discharged. On May 3, 1953, he married Eldora Greiner in Keota, Iowa.
John was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles, American Legion Post No. 298, and Local P-3 Retirees. He was involved with local politics and enjoyed nature, fishing, and spending time with family.
