Rev. John Raymond Caughron, Sr., of Marion, Iowa, formerly of Center Point, Iowa, departed this life on Friday, October 4, 2024.

During a professional career spanning more than 55 years, he counted among his highlights the initiation of new congregations in Illinois and Alabama, and the supervision of a half-million dollar renovation of the historic building of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Center Point, where he served as pastor for more than 18 years. In 2018 he returned to the pulpit of that congregation as interim pastor. In 2020 he was named Minister Emeritus.

Rev. Caughron is survived by his loving wife of more than 30 years, Sondra Hackerson-Caughron and her adult children, Eric and Leah, and grandchildren Olivia, Adyson and Benson, and by his own adult children, John Jr. (Joan) Caughron and Cathy Corzine, and grandchildren, Timothy, Aaron (Katelyn), James (Megan) and Jeremy and five great-grandchildren, Jenna, Kalie, Kaylie, Paisley and Declan. He is also survived by younger siblings, Frank (Nancy) Caughron Ill, and Ann (Charles) Graham, one niece, three nephews and three cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his granddaughter, Jennifer, and by his infant grandson, Jonathan.

John was born to Frank Jr. and Ann (Kienzle) Caughron on December 5, 1939, in Danville, Illinois. He was a graduate of Danville High School, University of Lynchburg (VA), and Christian Theological Seminary. He was a member of American MENSA. He was ordained September 3, 1961. He served congregations of Disciples of Christ in Illinois, Virginia, Alabama and Iowa.

The family will greet friends at the Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Center Point on Thursday, October 10, 2024, from 4 to 7 p.m. A Celebration of Life service will take place on Friday, October 11, 2024, at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Center Point, with private interment at a later time at the Center Point Cemetery. Members of his family will greet friends and colleagues at the church building during the hour prior to the service.
