John W. Busenbark, 87, a resident of Higley Mansion Care Center, died Wednesday, August 13, 2003, at the care center, following a long illness. Services: 10 a.m. Monday, August 18, 2003, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Center Point by Rev. John Caughron. Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial: Center Point Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Erma; a son, Thomas W. (Wilma) Busenbark of Shellsburg; a daughter, Susan (Roy) Cole of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Betty (Dick) Riley of Des Moines; four grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; six great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; two nephews; and three nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; and a step-granddaughter.
John was born in Whittier on September 28, 1915, the son of Merle and Nora (Burns) Busenbark. He graduated from the old Cedar Rapids Washington High School in 1933. On August 11, 1940, he married Erma Glenna Street at the Methodist Church in Center Point. John and Erma celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on Monday.
John was a truck salesman in the Cedar Rapids area and received several awards for his outstanding sales achievements during his career. He served as a former Councilman and Mayor of Center Point. John was a 50-year member of Mt. Hermon Lodge #263 AF & AM and the Cedar Rapids Consistory and also a member of the Methodist Church in Center Point.
After his retirement he and Erma spent time fishing on the Mississippi River and winters in Florida. John always had a smile for everyone and enjoyed being with friends and family, especially playing cards.
John will be greatly missed by his family whom he was so very proud of.
John and his family greatly appreciated the care that was given by the Higley Mansion staff and St. Luke?s Hospice Staff.
