John Robert “Bob” Monahan, 83, of 1794 Mary Drive, Marion, died, Thursday, February 28, 2008, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, following a sudden illness. Services: 12:00 p.m., Monday, March 3, 2008, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by Reverend Nancy Monahan. The family will greet friends from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Survivors include his children, Maureen (John) Corcoran of Cedar Rapids, Colleen (Shane) Burns of Cedar Rapids, John Robert “Bobby” Monahan II of Marion, Bret Monahan of Cedar Rapids, Joe (Melissa) Monahan of Alma, Nebraska, Dawn Feuchtwanger of Marion, Gloria Monahan and Dale Monahan, both of Porterville, California. His extended family of children includes: Terry Cook, Bob Stehno, Becky Chiafos, Stephen McLaughlin, David McLaughlin, and Kelly Giese.
Other survivors include twenty-nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; siblings, Joan (Lynn) Stratford of Bakersfield, California, Carole Pinneke of Mason City, and Gordon (Nancy) Monahan of Nebo, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his wife, of over forty years Addie; and two brothers, Dean Monahan and Phillip Monahan.
Bob was born August 3, 1924, the son of Arthur and Annetta (Potter) Monahan, in Hampton, Iowa. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1941. Serving during W.W. II (1942 ?" 1947) aboard the U.S.S. Piedmont, Bob served as Pharmacist Mate in the U.S. Navy, later becoming a long time member of the VFW. He married Addie on March 25, 1967.
Bob was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed his time fishing and camping. As a huge sports fan Bob diligently following the Cubs, Hawkeyes, and NASCAR. He loved attending family get-togethers and sharing his wonderful sense of humor. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He touched many lives in many ways and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Bob’s name.
