Joann Marie Russell

JoAnn Marie Russell, 85, of Central City, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at her home surrounded by her family. The family will greet friends from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Central City, Iowa. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Marion, Iowa, with a one-hour additional visitation prior to the service. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family.
JoAnn was born on July 11, 1939, in Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Dorothy (Wille) Glandorf. She was a 1957 graduate of Williamsburg High School. On January 20, 1961, JoAnn was united in marriage to William West Russell Jr. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Together, they had three children. After they started school, she worked in the cafeteria for the Central City Schools. JoAnn was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Marion. She was a volunteer at the local Farmer’s Market, a Cub Scout Den Mother, and helped with Campfire Girls. JoAnn was an avid Yahtzee player and excellent baker, especially cinnamon rolls. She enjoyed sewing and morning coffee with friends. JoAnn will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
JoAnn is survived and lovingly remembered by her three children, Bill (Trina) Russell of Central City, Barb (Mike) Pillard of Anamosa, Iowa, and Deb (Mike) Kula of Marion; five grandchildren, Allison (James) Voss, Janel (Kevin) Miller, Lianne (Mike) Cairy, Kelsey Russell, and Katelyn (Shawn) McDonald; eight greatgrandchildren, Luke, Sarah, Kurt, Natalie, Amelia, Aria, Paisley, and Michaela; one sister, Eileen Smith of Hermiston, Oregon; and sisters-in-law, Juanita Mindt and Viola Lemburg, both of South Dakota.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William “Bill” Russell Jr.; brother, Harvey Glandorf; brothers-in-law, Harold Wertz, Arnie Mindt, Darrell Smith, Keith Lemburg, Everett Russell, and Carl Pike; and sisters-in-law, Delores Russell, Leola Pike, and Helen Wertz.
