Joan Wilson McKeag Brooks Sheppard, 81, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester.

Graveside services: 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 27, 2011, Oakland Cemetery, Manchester, Iowa. Visitation: 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 27, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church in Manchester with an 11:00 a.m. Memorial Service by Rev. Michael Manaugh.

Joan was born June 29, 1929 in Manchester, the daughter of John J. and Agnes (Wilson) McKeag. Graduating from Manchester High School in 1947, she attended Rockford College and graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1951. Joan married Calvin Brooks in 1951 at Grand Lake, CO. Joan spent the next 10 years on the West coast, returning to the Midwest in 1967. On March 19, 1971, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Sheppard. Joan was a secretary for most of her life, being the Delaware County Recorder for 25 years prior to retirement in 1991.

Joan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manchester and enjoyed singing in the choir. She had a very loving heart with a sense of adventure. She enjoyed nature, flowers (especially daffodils), planting, camping, traveling, playing cards and friends.

Joan is survived by her husband, Kenneth Sheppard of Manchester; children, John Brooks of San Jose, CA, Betsy Brooks of Golden, CO; Larry (Peg) Sheppard of Manchester, Susan (Steven) Raab of Philadelphia, PA, Kathleen (Frank) Kelm of Janesville, WI, Julie (John Buikema) Boysen of Frisco, TX, Steven (Mary) Sheppard of Coggon; one daughter-in-law, Denise (Randy) Stone, Manchester; 16 grandchildren, Elizabeth (Justin), Mark, Rachael, Doug (Amy), Emily (Mark), Nathan (Karen), Jonus (Alexa), Sarah, Stephanie (Jeremy), Ryan (Lisa), Angie, Tyler (Kaylee), Blake, Charity (Chad), Tara (Kyle), and Adam (Chelsea); 14 great-grandchildren, Dan, Abby, Kate, Mae, Hannah, Sophie, Elijah, Kapri, Beckham, Kyria, Kael, Cruz, Cash, and Ava; two sisters, Marcia (Willard) Hawker of Manchester and Jane (Jack) Myers of Springfield, MO.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, John and Agnes McKeag, and two sons, Tom Brooks in 1976, Jim Brooks in 2003 and one son-in-law, Dennis Thole in 1995;.
