Jewell Ethel Modracek (Latting)

Jewell E. Modracek, 81, of Amana, Iowa, formerly of rural Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, July 19, 2007, in Colonial Manor Nursing Home, Amana, from complication of Parkinson’s disease. Services: 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 23, 2007, at Shueyville United Methodist Church, Shueyville, by the Rev. Thomas Carver. The family will greet friends from 3 to 7 p.m., Sunday, July 22, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Shueyville Cemetery.
Survivors include her children, Dennis (Judy) Modracek of Mt. Vernon, Duane (Debi) Modracek of Hiawatha, Janice (Timothy) Scheurs of Amana and Cathy Schulte of Tiffin; eleven grandchildren, Krista, Eric, Alan, Jennifer, Melissa, Candice, Breanne, Whitney, Elizabeth, Laura and Luke; six great-grandchildren, Karri, Seth, Jacklyn, Alijah, Cailin and Rachel; and brothers and sisters, Joy Baker of Vinton, Cecil Latting of Waverly, Dorothy White of Cedar Rapids, Irene Kohl of Columbia, Missouri and Donna (Dwain) Holst of Morningside, California.
Jewell was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin; and her brother, Webster Latting.
Jewell was born December 9, 1925, in Traer, Iowa, the daughter of Orville and Lucy (Daringer) Latting. On January 22, 1949, she was united in marriage to Melvin Modracek in Cedar Rapids. He died April 4, 2001. She was employed as a cook for the College Community School District for 25 years. She was a member of the Shueyville United Methodist Church.
Jewell was a good athlete in many sports and a champion kolache baker. She enjoyed gardening and traveling after her retirement, but enjoyed most being a grandmother.
