Jewell Ferguson (Jobe)
January 16, 1929 — July 2, 2008
Jewell Ferguson, 79, of Solon, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at the Solon Nursing Care Center, following a brief illness. Services: 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Renee Lunemann. Family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, July 7, 2008, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her children, Janet Evans of Cedar Rapids, Carol Ferguson of Denver, Colorado and Mike (Diane) Ferguson of Solon; six grandchildren, Crassie Evans, Mark (Jenna) Ferguson, Paul Evans, Ekem Evans, Olivia Ferguson and Dalton Ferguson; a great-grandson, Paul Martin Evans; and five nieces, Aljean, Eloysie, Sandra, Sheila and Sharon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Russell.
Jewell was born January 16, 1929, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Richard and Lucille (Hamer) Jobe. On May 15, 1947, she married Russell Ferguson in Cedar Rapids. He died June 8, 2008. Jewell was an electrical inspector for Rockwell Collins for 39 years.
Some of Jewell’s joys were crocheting, making ceramics and shopping. She and Russell enjoyed traveling all over the world. She was an avid bowler and participated in numerous leagues and tournaments as well as being a member of the Women’s International Bowling Congress. Jewell was very active in union and political organizations, serving on the IBEW Local 1362 Executive Board and as a steward and chief steward, was president of the A. Philip Randolph Institute, a member of the local NAACP board, Coalition of Labor Union Women and the Linn County Democrats. After retirement, she owned and operated Just Jewell’s Consignment Shop.
Jewell was a wonderful and devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of Jewell.
