Jesse Souza, 95, surrounded by his family, Papa left this earth on eagle’s wings and was delivered to God’s hands on July 8, 2013. Funeral Mass: 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church by Father David O’Connor. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday July 10, 2013, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Beatrice Joan Souza; daughter, Beatrice Ann Horning and husband, Gale; son, Frank Souza; grandchildren, Stacey (Kevin) Klostermann, Kelly Horning, Tina Souza, Dawn (Charles) Adney, Eric Souza, Benjamin Souza and Emily Souza; great-grandchildren, Hailey, Brendan and Andrew Klostermann and Charles and Greenlee Adney.
Jesse was born on September 3, 1917, in Cambridge, Massachusetts to Joseph and Alexandria Souza, the youngest of eight children. He attended school in Cambridge. He was drafted into service on January 2, 1943, at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts and went to Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. He left the U.S. on January 12, 1944, with the 532nd Ordinance Company. He was honorably discharged at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts on November 19, 1945. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, European/African/Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and Purple Heart. Jesse took the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in September of 2010.
Jesse will always be remembered for his quiet strength, quick wit, and love of a good bargain. We will miss his magic tricks, math problems, and unfailing encouragement. He was a constant source of entertainment and amazement to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the Marion paramedics and officers who responded to our call for help last Saturday night and our boundless gratitude to the nurses, staff, and doctors at St. Luke’s Emergency Department, 5W, CCU and Hospice Unit for their exceptional attention and care of our entire family the last few days.
