Jerry Akers, Jr., 95, of Central City, died Thursday, July 16, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, from complications of surgery. Services: 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 20, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church in Central City, conducted by Rev. Leo & Sherri Andersen. The family will greet friends from 5 ?" 8 p.m., Sunday, July 19, 2009 at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Central City, Iowa. Burial: Mt. Clark Cemetery, Central City.
Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Wilma, of Central City; two sons, Jerry D. (Nancy) Akers and Merle (Joan) Akers, both of Central City; a brother, Eldon, of Central City; 8 grandsons, Jerry D. Jr., Bradley, Scott, Douglas, Jeffrey, Christopher, Thomas and James; 2 granddaughters, Suzanne and Pamela; 25 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and 2 sisters-in-law, Alice & Alberta Akers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 10 brothers, James, Alfred, Henry, Ralph, Leroy, Victor, Vernon, Donald, Robert, and Freddy; 2 sisters, Charlotte and Mary.
Jerry was born April 22, 1914, the son of Jeremiah and Vinelandis (Sheppard) Akers in Morse, Johnson County, Iowa. On June 7, 1936, he married Wilma L. Price on her parents’ farm near Central City. Jerry farmed all of his life near Central City. His greatest joys were farming, pitching horseshoes, watching his grandchildren involved in athletics; the Yankees, Cardinals and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
