Jerry Linn Carter, 75, of Tyler, Texas, formerly of Marion, Iowa, ascended into heaven on August 21, 2016, as a result of pancreatic cancer in Tyler, Texas while in the loving care of Hospice of East Texas. Memorial Gathering: 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 16, 2016, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Celebration of Life: 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 16, 2016, at the funeral home. A private committal service will take place at a later date.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy Caroline Carter; son, Gregory (Elsa) Carter; daughters, Kimberly (Brian) Carter-Clark and Sherri (Jeff) Van Hess; daughter-in-law, Mary Carter; seven grandchildren, Alex Bruce (US Army), Meggan Rubendall, Andrea Ahmed, Scott Carter, Mike Carter, Gregory Carter and Shae Kiely; seven great-grandchildren, Charlotte Rubendall, Maya Ahmed, Layla Ahmed, Ryden Bruce-Nicholson, Mckenzie Rubendall, Tyler Rubendall and Amir Ahmed; sister, Jeanne (Mark) Carter; and brother, Dean (Rita) Carter.
Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Orville Dean Carter; mother, Lucille Carter; and one son, Jeffrey Dean Carter.
Jerry was born on November 10, 1940, in Los Angeles, California and moved to Enid, Oklahoma at the end of World War II. After graduating from Enid High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and completed basic and advanced training at Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio, Texas. While assigned to James Connolly Air Force base near Waco, Texas, Jerry married the love of his life, Nancy Caroline Wright. They were assigned to various Air Force bases while raising three of their four children. After leaving the Air Force in 1965, the family eventually moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa where their fourth child was born. Jerry was employed by Collins Avionics for more than 20 years before moving to East Texas. In Tyler, Texas, he worked for the State of Texas until retiring in 2005.
Jerry was a devoted family man and personified the definition of son, brother, husband, father and friend. He had a contagious sense of humor and a calming presence. He enjoyed time with his wife, golf, fishing, amateur radio, cooking and Iowa Hawkeye football. Jerry touched the lives of many people and his legacy of a compassionate, generous and patient soul will live through each of those fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet him. He will be missed.
