Jerome “Jerry” L. Schlueter, 85, of Keystone Cedars Assisted Living, Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, September 22, 2011. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 26, 2011, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church, by Father Dennis Juhl. Family will greet friends from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, September 25, 2011, at the church, where a vigil service will begin at 4 p.m. and visitation one hour prior to the service on Monday. Burial: St. John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Arrangements with Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Martha; his children, Randy (Wendy) Schlueter of Marion, Jeff (Michelle) Schlueter of Cincinnati, Ohio, Michael (Amy) Schlueter, of Chicago, Illinois, and Lynda (Wayne) Cook of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Brandon Schlueter, Tyler Schlueter, Anna Schlueter, Emmett Schlueter, Ryan Cook, T.J. Cook, Adam Cook and Dustin Cook; siblings, Bernice Schlueter, Marcus (Joyce) Schlueter, Francis (Theresa) Schlueter and Marion McGrane; sister-in-law, Phyllis Schlueter; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Gerald and Viryl Schlueter.
Jerome was born March 26, 1926, the son of Henry and Eleanor (Miller) Schlueter, in Guttenberg, Iowa. He attended rural school of Dundee. Jerome served his country with the United States Army and was combat wounded earning him the purple heart during the Korean Conflict. In 1959, he was united in marriage to Martha Dvorak at St. Ludmila Catholic Church. For 28 years, Jerome worked maintenance at Rockwell Collins.
Jerome was a member of the Catholic Order of Forresters and a lifetime member of the VFW #788. He enjoyed golfing, visiting the casinos, gardening, lawn caring, fishing, hunting and going to the Kernels games. His greatest love was spending time with his grandchildren and watching them at their activities.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Iowa Hospice and the staff at Keystone Cedars for their special care given to Jerome.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Ludmila Catholic Church in memory of Jerome.
