Jerome “Jerry” V. Johannes, 89, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, December 11, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Parish Service: 1:00 p.m. Sunday, December 17, 2017, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Visitation: 1 - 4 p.m. at the funeral home on Sunday. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 18, 2017, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Father Steve Garner. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Jerry was born January 27, 1928, in Dyersville, Iowa, the son of William and Zita (Langel) Johannes. He graduated from the University of Iowa with his degree in Electrical Engineering. Jerry served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On May 16, 1953, in Ft. Atkinson, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Celeste Zbornik. Jerry was employed at Iowa Manufacturing as an electrical engineer until retiring in 1991. He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Celeste of Cedar Rapids; children, Keith (Cathy) Johannes of Seattle, Washington, Ann (Ron) Searcy of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Kay (Brad) Hess of Bertram, Iowa; and five grandchildren, Eric Johannes of San Diego, California, Elizabeth (Fiancé, Chris Hidalgo) Searcy of Phoenix, Arizona, Kathryn Searcy of New Orleans, Louisiana, Jessica Hess of Bertram, Iowa, and Elliot Hess of Bertram, Iowa.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
