Jeanne was born June 26, 1935, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Floyd and Margaret (Williams) Emmons. She grew up on a Linn County farm. In her lifetime, this farm achieved “Century” and “Heritage” status. Jeanne attended “grammar school” in a one-room schoolhouse before attending Marion High School, graduating in 1953. She became proficient in the lost art of shorthand and took a job as a legal secretary in the Cedar Rapids firm of Shuttleworth & Ingersoll. There Jeanne met a young lawyer named James H. Carter. On August 7, 1965, Jeanne was united in marriage to James. Together, they were avid Iowa Hawkeye Basketball fans, following the team as far as Alaska and Hawaii, and attending the team’s appearance in the 1980 Final Four. Jeanne collected antique furniture and competently refinished many pieces. For much of her life she was a regular patron of the Cedar Rapids Symphony and Cedar Rapids Community Theater, and a member of P.E.O. Chapter CS Marion. Many believe her spaghetti sauce recipe to be history’s greatest. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Jeanne is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughter, Carol (Hans) Carter-Wientjes of Metairie, Louisiana; son, James (Janna) Carter of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren; two nieces, Linda (Leland) Osmundson of Alburnett and Eileen Barber-Goodwin of Cedar Rapids; one nephew, Bruce (Chris) Barber of Urbana, Illinois; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Margaret Emmons; husband of over 50 years, the Honorable James H. Carter; and sister, Virginia (Earl) Barber.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Cedar Rapids Community Theater.
