Jean Ann Franklin, 80, of Vinton, formerly of Hiawatha, died Sunday, December 4, 2011, at Windsor Manor Assisted Living in Vinton. Memorial Service: 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 7, 2011, at Murdoch Funeral Home in Central City. Burial: Coggon Cemetery, Coggon.

Survivors include her children, Stephen W. Coomes of Owensboro, KY, Janis Franklin (Dennis Kelchen) of Anchorage, AK, Christopher J. (Marcia) Franklin of Cedar Rapids, and Nancy (Keith) Schmitz of Urbana; grandchildren, Jill & Ryan Franklin, Abby Anthony; a sister, Joy (H. Dean) Batterson of Washington, IA; and a brother, Wallace (Joan) Fairchild of Oelwein.

She was preceded in death by her husband Marion; her parents; and a brother, Keith Fairchild.

Jean was born August 14, 1931, in Walker, Iowa, the daughter of Edmond and Delpha (Heiserman) Fairchild. On December 27, 1952, she was united in marriage to Marion J. Franklin in Kansas City. She was a lifelong and dedicated Registered Nurse in the Labor and Delivery department at St. Luke’s Hospital; then volunteered with St. Luke’s Auxiliary. She was respected by her fellow nurses and doctors. Jean was the first recipient of the Smulekoff Award for Excellence in Nursing Practice. Jean was a member of Zion Presbyterian Church in Coggon and was involved in the Optimist Club. She was an avid bridge player, enjoyed cooking for her friends and family, and spending time with her grandchildren.
