Jean Ellen Vos, 82, of Center Point, died Friday, September 3, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center following a brief illness. Services: 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 8, 2004, at United Methodist Church, Center Point, conducted by Rev. Mike Ellson. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m., Tuesday, September 7, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point. Burial: Center Point Cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Vicki (Larry) Longfield of Phoenix, Arizona and Valarie Rhinehart of Center Point; a son, Gary Vos of Pensacola, Florida; her grandchildren, Shawndara (Tim) Brady of Ventura, California, Shelli (Dave) Longfield-McClain of Alameda, California, Wendi Davis of Phoenix, Tia-Michelle (Andrew) Ricklefs of Ames, Iowa and Brian Rhinehart of Center Point; four great-grandchildren, Hannah Davis, Cavan and Everett Brady, Gabrielle Ricklefs; a brother, Ronald (Dorthe) Decker of Roseville, California; a sister-in-law, Una Vos of Fulton, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents and a sister, Kaye.
Jean was born February 7, 1922, in Fulton, Illinois, the daughter of Isaac and Lula Mummert Decker. She lived in Fulton and graduated from Fulton High School in Fulton, Illinois in 1940. On May 2, 1941, she married Harold "Gabby? Vos at her parent?s home in Fulton. During World War II, she stayed in Fulton while Gabby was away serving his country in the Navy. In 1954, they bought a small newspaper business in Chandlerville, Illinois. In 1959, the family moved to Center Point to start the Town and Country Shopper. Jean worked for the bank in Center Point for several years, then worked at People?s bank in Cedar Rapids, Paul Revere Insurance in Cedar Rapids, and KGAN-TV until her retirement in 1984.
Jean was the first woman to serve on the City Council of Center Point after being appointed to fill her husband?s term following his death in 1980. In 1981, she won the seat in her own right and served four years. She was instrumental in the founding of the Center Point Lionesses, an auxiliary of the local Lions Club chapter, which had been started by her late husband. She was treasurer for the Esther Circle of the United Methodist Church for many years and was involved in the making of hundreds of butterflies sold to raise money for the new bell tower for the United Methodist Church in Center Point. In addition, she helped her husband found the U.S.S West Point Reunion Association.
A memorial fund has been established in Jean?s memory.
