Jay R. Sopher, 81, of 119 Heath St. NW, died Sunday, October 12, 2003, at St. Luke?s Hospital, following a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at St. Mark?s United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids by Rev. Carroll Brown and Rev. LeRoy Collins. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids where a Masonic Service will begin at 7 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial: Linwood Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mary K.; two sons, Foster Jay Sopher of Seattle, Washington and Charles (Lorna) Rolland Sopher of Mounds View, Minnesota; a sister, Betty Jean (Heber G.) Whitley of Burlington, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Kelly, Meagan, Katherine and Molly Sopher and Andrew Charles and Shannon Marie Sopher; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Estella Johnson.

Jay was born December 7, 1921, the son of Jess Rolland and Maude Lillian (Saus) Sopher in Oskaloosa. On December 14, 1952, he married Mary Katharine Foster at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Jay served with the US Army during WWII with the 75th Recon. Division. He was a pipe fitter welder for over 50 years.

Jay was a charter member of St. Mark?s United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, a member of American Legion Post #298 of Marion, Local 125 pipe fitters/welders, and Cresent Lodge A.F. & A.M. and O.E.S. - Cedar. Jay and Mary K. volunteered at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City for over 15 years. They were the first couple of the "9 who care?.

Jay loved life and was blessed in death. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Memorials may be made to St. Mark?s United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids in Jay?s memory.

American Legion Post #298 of Marion will perform military rites and Cresent Lodge of Cedar Rapids will conduct Masonic Services.
