Janet Johnston Hawkins (Johnston)

Janet Johnston Hawkins, 85, a resident of Winslow House Care Center, died there Monday, December 4, 2006. Burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Memorial services will be at a later date.
Survivors include a niece, Marcia Poston of New York City, New York; two nephews, David Poston of Naples, Florida and Steve Poston of Houston Texas; and a step-sister, Ruth Swift of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Harry.
Janet was born August 6, 1921, the daughter of Samuel and Sara (Ochiltree) Johnston in Oskaloosa. She graduated from Tipton High School in 1939 and attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and received her AA degree from Kirkwood Community College in Literature. On April 9, 1947, she married Harry H. Hawkins in Cedar Rapids. He died October 5, 1997. Janet was a longtime legal secretary in Cedar Rapids. She was a member of PEO.
Janet?s father, Samuel Johnston was a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1918. Mr. Johnston died when Janet was four years old. To honor her father she later in life established a close relationship with the College of Dentistry by establishing the Dr. Samuel Johnston Dental Scholarship and the Dr. Samuel Johnston Student Fellowship. Janet and her husband also established the Harry H. and Janet J. Hawkins University of Iowa Scholarship to be used to assist deserving students throughout the University.
