Jane Elizabeth Nidey Benning, 62, of Walker, Iowa, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, Wednesday, May 4, 2016. Celebration of Life: 4p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2016, at First Assembly of God, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Rev. Rick Gail. Visitation: 2-4 p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2016, enter through doors three and four, at the church. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Benning of Walker, Iowa; children, Shelby (Tim) Folken of Walker, Gabe (Brooke) Cox of Riverside, Iowa, Joshua Cox of Walker, Melissa Benning of Rowan, Iowa, Levi Benning of Tiffin, Iowa, Luke (Kassidy McAtee) Benning of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Memphis Folken, Preston Folken, Kinzlie Cox, Charlie Cox, Noah Hyland, Isaiah Hyland and Brayleigh Benning; parents; and brother, Rick Nidey of Iowa City, Iowa.
Jane was born on December 21, 1953, in Iowa City, Iowa, daughter of Donald and Marilyn Nidey. In 1972, she graduated from Marion High School. She worked 35 years for the City of Cedar Rapids in housing services. Jane was appointed mayor of Walker in 2013, elected mayor in 2013 and re-elected to a second term in 2015. She enjoyed fishing, traveling and spending time with her family.
