Jan A. Schmidt passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2024, in Manchester, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Friday December 20, 2024, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home in Manchester. Funeral service will be held at St. Sebald Church in Strawberry Point, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2024. Burial to follow at Oakland Cemetery in Manchester, with Military Honors.

Jan was born on February 25, 1943, in Strawberry Point, Iowa, the son of Alex and Helen (Hock) Schmidt. He was confirmed at St. Sebald Church, graduated from Strawberry Point High School in 1961 and went on the receive his BS from Wartburg College in 1967.

Following college, Jan served in the Airforce as a Staff Sargent at Dyess AFB in Abilene, Texas from 1966-1970. After he returned from service, he attended the University of Illinois and earned his Master’s in Social Work. He dedicated his career to serving children, starting at Linn County Child and Family Services, then later spending over 25 years with Keystone Area Education Agency.

Jan gained much more than a degree from Illinois, and he and Betty (Kolves) Schmidt were married at St. Sebald in 1973. Their joy and family grew with the birth of Brandon in 1976 and Bethany in 1982.

Jan enjoyed fishing, telling jokes, and spending time with friends and family. He was a kind heart and steady observer, often found just watching and taking deep pleasure in the joy of those he loved.

Jan is survived by his son Brandon (Dara) Schmidt and grandchildren Elliot, Hugo and Nora; daughter Bethany (Jason) Schmidt Self; sister-in-law Janet Lane and niece Tracy Price and nephew Gregg Lane. He is also survived by his partner Mary Twomey and her grandchildren Hermione, Violet, (Erin and Taro) Alice, Patrick, Jack, (Chris and Lisa) Jameson and Finley (Megan and Doug). He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, brother-in-law Chuck, and Mary’s grandson Linus.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Delaware County Food Bank or Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation.
