James J. Taylor, 70, of Marion, formerly of Springville, died Thursday, February 24, 2005, at his home. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 28, 2005, at Springville Presbyterian Church with Rev. Julie Anderson-Schuett presiding. Burial will follow at Springville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion on Sunday, February 27, 2005.
Born January 24, 1935 on the family farm near Springville, Jim was the son of Alexander and Freida (Johnston) Taylor. He received his education in the Springville Schools. Following graduation from Springville High School in 1953, Jim worked on the family farm until his retirement in 1992. He took great pride in the Taylor farming operation. He was an avid tractor-pull competitor, winning numerous events. He was also a league bowler, a devout Hawkeye fan, and a man of fine tastes.
Jim enlisted in the Army Reserves in 1957 and received an honorable discharge in 1963. Jim was a master woodworker, creating beautiful pieces with his hands. Following his retirement from farming, Jim successfully owned and operated J&J Paint and Wallpapering with his niece, Jane, until his second retirement in January 2003.
Jim was a lifetime member of Springville Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon and elder. He also served on the board at Springville Cooperative Elevator.
Those left to cherish his memory are his sister, Margaret and brother-in-law, Allen Fernow of Orange City; sister-in-law, Sally Taylor of Cedar Rapids; nine nieces and nephews, Jim (Karlene) Fernow of Stafford, Virginia, Jane (David) Sallee of Marion, Mary Fernow of Orange City, Mark Fernow of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Melinda (Bill) Rhoads of Cedar Rapids, Alex (Barb) Taylor of Cedar Rapids, Doug (Claire) Taylor of Irmo, South Carolina, Greg (Alix) Taylor of San Luis Obispo, California and Stephanie (Fadi) Khoury of Dubai, United Arab Emirates; special friends, Keith and Brett Glasco of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; fourteen great nieces and nephews, Ashley, A.J., Taylor, Zachary, Spencer, Alex, Lindsey, John, Meagan, Katherine, Nina, ?ndréa and Natalie; and many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Alexander.
