James E. "Gene? Swank, 75, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, September 2, 2005, at his home, following a short illness. Memorial Service: 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2005, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his daughter, Susan Swank of Long Beach, California; two sisters, Carol Miller of Cleburne, Texas, and Noel Berryman of St. Charles, Missouri; and his God-son, Kent Van Metre of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Eugene Swank, Jr; a daughter, Julia Redman Swank; and his wife, Barbara.
Gene was born August 1, 1930, the son of Noel and Hallie Redman Swank, in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Colorado College where he played football and was a member of the 1950 Hall of Fame Football team. Gene served in the United States Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954. On February 2, 1957, he was united in marriage to Barbara Henderson in St. Louis, Missouri. She died September 13, 1991. Gene worked in Chicago in sales and advertising for NBC and then moved to Cedar Rapids, where he has lived for 20 years, working for Rapids, Inc.
Gene was an avid golfer and was a member of Lake McBride Country Club. He enjoyed playing in the annual Bourbon Open in Bardstown, Kentucky. He also was a sports fan and enjoyed watching Colorado College, St. Louis Cardinals, and University of Missouri Football and Basketball.
