James Stephenson, 83, of Center Point, died Sunday, January 11, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Services: 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 15, 2009, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by Rev. Larry Daubs. The family will greet friends from 4 - 7 p.m., Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at the funeral home. Burial: Squires-Oliphant Cemetery, Toddville, Iowa. Military rites provided by Toddville American Legion Post 674.
Survivors include his wife, Janice, of 56 years; daughters, Susie (Terry) Phillips of Petersburg, Illinois, Donna Cody of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Marlys (Warren) Coe of Rosemount, Minnesota, and Julie (Rob) Young of Greenfield, Indiana; a son, James Stephenson, Jr., of Decatur, Illinois; a brother, Warren Stephenson of Toddville; 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son-in-law, Larry Cody.
James was born October 8, 1925, the son of Ira W. and Stella (Hagerman) Stephenson, in rural Toddville, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy from December, 1943 ?" June, 1946 and graduated from Iowa State University in 1950. James married Janice Klindt on January 20, 1952 and farmed for 41 years in the Center Point area. He was a member of and served as Treasurer for the Toddville American Legion for 54 years and the Linn County Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Linn Co-Op Board and Center Point Fire Agency. James was a member of Green’s Grove Community Church and served in various capacities, and most recently attended Victory Baptist Church in Center Point.
