James R. Smeed, a resident of Bickford Cottage of Marion, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away Thursday, August 24, 2006, at his residence at the age of 72. Services: 11 a.m. Monday, September 11, 2006, at First Presbyterian Church in Marion, by the Rev. Jay Miller. Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion. Friends may call from 4 - 6 p.m. Sunday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion.

Survivors include his sister, Carol (Don) Rees of Manchester; his aunt, Rosalie Hosterman of Wisconsin; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Thelma (Hosterman) Smeed.

Jim was born September 28, 1933, in Highland Park, Michigan. He worked for the railroad in Montana and was employed by food services at St. Luke?s Hospital for twenty-nine years.

Jim had an interest in polkas and enjoyed going to polka fests and listening to his collection of polka music. He knew many of the polka bands and musicians. Another interest was railroads. He read many books and articles on railroads and enjoyed visiting old depots, railroad museums and riding on trains.

Jim will be missed by his family and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Jim?s memory.
