James W. Sherman, 71, of Center Point, Iowa, died at home Saturday, October 20, 2007, following a long battle with cancer. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, October 22, 2007, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point. Services: 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 23, 2007, at the Center Point United Methodist Church, Center Point, by Pastor Mike Ellson. Inurnment at a later date at the Center Point Cemetery, Center Point.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia; son, Rick (Betsey Johnson) Sherman of Davenport; daughters, Sue Sherman of Cedar Rapids and Tina (Joe) Schemmel of Marion; grandchildren, Ben Schemmel, Eric Schemmel, William Sherman and Eliza Sherman; brother-in-law, Al Edaburn; and sister-in-law, Mary Sherman; sisters-in-law, Violet (Raymond) Haars, Velma (Vernon) Roseberry, Helen (Ed) Wall, Ann Comried and Barbara (Wayne) Carver; brothers-in-law, Bob (Virginia) Benson, Bill (Robyn) Benson and Kenneth (Pat) Benson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Irvin, Ivan, Herb and Ray; sister, Elsie Edaburn; James was born September 9, 1936, in Center Point, Iowa, the son of Charles and Selina (Kruse) Sherman. He served in the U.S. Army. On May 9, 1959, he was united in marriage to Patricia Benson. He worked for Collins Radio and Farm Bureau Insurance.
James was a member of Center Point United Methodist Church, Linn County Farm Bureau and the Center Point Fire Agency. He was a past member of the Lions Club. He was Charter President of the Center Point Jaycees. He served on the Center Point School Board.
Military honors by the Dye Benion American Legion Post #297.
