James “Jim” D. Shay, 65, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 13, 2017, at home. Celebration of Love will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Inurnment: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his fiancé, Debbie Benson; daughter, Dawn Shay-Braun (Bill); stepdaughter, Teri Benson (Jason); granddaughter, Chloe; siblings, Gene Shay (Shirley), Larry Shay (Marge) and Karen Reynolds (Kyle); numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Smoke.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Neil McGee; and brother, Lee Shay.
Jim was born July 10, 1951, son of Clarence and Adella (Rienke) Shay, in Oelwein, Iowa. He was a self-employed contractor. An avid fisherman and a below average golfer, Jim was passionate about the things he loved. Jim’s sense of humor didn’t always tickle everyone’s fancy. But if he loved you, he loved you completely.
