James Swan McPartland, 83, of 2275 Northview Drive, died Thursday, July 1, 2004, in University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, following a short illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 5, 2004, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, by the Rev. John Gossman. Burial: Mt Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military rites by American Legion Marion Post 298. Friends may call from 4 to 7 on Sunday, July 4, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, where a parish vigil will be held at 6:30 p.m.
Survivors include his Cedar Rapids area sons, Jim (Kathy) McPartland and Dan (Betsy) Meloan; his other son, Kip (Bette Jo) Meloan of Montana; his brother, Jack of Florida; his brother-in-law, Jack (Faye) Goslin of Cedar Rapids; his grandchildren with Pat are Dan (Katie) Meloan of the Quad Cities, Matthew Meloan of Cedar Rapids, Kathleen Meloan of Colorado, Carrie Meloan Toland of Colorado and Patrick McPartland of Marion.
Jim is additionally blessed with seven great-grandchildren; and many dear friends across Iowa and the country. Jean Zisko?s wonderful family addition to Jim?s life includes sons, Tom (Dena) of Des Moines and their children Elizabeth, Leigh and Patrick, Jerry (Jackie) Zisko and his son, David of Hawaii and Jean's daughter, Kris (Tom) Tobin of Arizona and their children, Emily and Jana; and Jim?s very special niece, Kathy Burgoyne of Pocattelo, Idaho.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Barney and Bill, two beautiful twin granddaughters, Molly and Elizabeth Meloan, and two fabulous wives, Patricia Goslin and Jean Jungjohan Zisko.
Jim was born to Agnes and Barney McPartland of Cedar Rapids on May 13, 1921. He graduated from Franklin High School in Cedar Rapids in 1938 and attended Coe College until enlisting in the Army at the beginning of World War II. He served in the Infantry under Patton in France and Germany.
After the war Jim returned home and enjoyed his lifelong passion, the game of golf. For a couple of years he managed the old Montrose Hotel in Cedar Rapids. He, also, served a short stint as pro, manager and chief cook and bottle washer at the Elks Club in Oelwein before coming back home to Marion.
Jim, a life member of the Professional Golfers Association of America, became the club pro at Indian Creek Country Club in Marion in 1953. He retired after thirty-two years in 1985. He finally was really free to play the game he loved with his family and many friends. His last round of golf on this earth was this spring at the annual Jim McPartland Amateur at Indian Creek.
Jim was a sacristan for many years at St. Joseph Catholic Church. He volunteered every week for the past seventeen years at Mercy Medical Center, where he worked each Tuesday morning in the emergency room.
He loved classical music and classical poetry, often reciting Shelley and Keats with true understanding and enthusiasm. Whether playing gin rummy with his friends or playing golf - Jim was the eternal optimist. He truly loved life and all its joys and sorrows. He lived it as fully as anyone ever has.
No finer husband, father, and friend ever lived. We, your family and friends, will forever hold you dear. As always, Jim, watch over us all.
