James D. Marsh, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, August 8, 2010, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Services: 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 14, 2010, at Murdoch Funeral Home, Marion, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 4 – 8 p.m., Friday, August 13, 2010, at the funeral home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Jim will have a military Honor Guard conducted by American Legion, Post 298, Marion, to recognize his service to our country.
Jim was born September 27, 1924, in Marion. He was the youngest son of Fay and Ruth (Newman) Marsh, in Marion, Iowa. He attended Marion High School where he lettered in football and basketball, graduating in 1942. Jim entered the Navy in 1943 and served on the U.S.S. Half Moon in the South Pacific until 1946. On February 2, 1946, Jim married Arlene Trpkosh of Marion. They were married 34 years until her death in 1980. Jim then dated Rita Urbanek of Marion and they enjoyed each others companionship until he died. His son, Robert, Rita, along with other loves ones, were at his side when he died. Jim was an electrician at Quaker Oats for 34 years, retiring in 1986. He was a lifetime member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace workers and a 64-year member of the American Legion Post #298 in Marion. Jim was often called on for wiring projects and donated his time and talent to oversee the electrical phase of construction on the American Legion building in Marion. His other interests were sports, travel, camping, fishing, hunting, and farming. During his family years, he owned the now classic Allis Chalmers W.D., The Oliver 66 and the Farmall H.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife and sweetheart, Arlene Marsh; his brother, Robert Gene Marsh, and his parents, Ruth and Fay Marsh.
Jim is survived by his beloved Rita Urbanek of Marion; his son John Marsh of Sandstone, Minnesota, and his son, Robert (Jean) Marsh of Flagstaff, Arizona. He is also survived by his grandson, Elliot Marsh of Albuquerque, New Mexico; his granddaughter, Sarah (Ryan) Sandhaus of Phoenix, Arizona, and 2 great-grandsons, Trent, 23 months and Emmitt, 11 days old.
Memorials may be donated to the family and will be given to the United Methodist Church on Relief, or to a charity of your choice, in Jim’s memory.
