Jim Spicer, 53, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Friday, April 7, 2017, from an airplane accident near Oxford, Iowa. Visitation: 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids with a 3:00 p.m. scripture service. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at the church. Rosary: 10:00 a.m. Rev. Kenneth J. Glaser will officiate. Interment: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.

Jim was born September 25, 1963, in Luverne, Minnesota, the son of Albert “Gene” Spicer and Mary Ann (Woodley) Spicer. He joined the National Guard while in high school and served for six years. Jim graduated from Pipestone High School in 1982 and then North Dakota State University as an Electrical Engineer in 1986. While in college, Jim met Laura Marie Scheett and they married on June 21, 1986, at Blessed Sacrament in West Fargo, North Dakota. Jim was hired at Interstate Power & Light and the couple moved to Dubuque, Iowa. After a company merger, the family moved to Mason City, Iowa, and Jim worked at Alliant Energy. In 2008, Jim started working for ITC Midwest and they moved to Cedar Rapids.
Jim was very active. He enjoyed coaching baseball and officiating football. He loved cars, traveling, live concerts, sporting events, and he had a passion for flying. He was a past president of the Mason City School Board and at the time of his passing he was the president of the Alliant Energy Credit Union, Mason City, Recording Secretary of the Knights of Columbus Council # 5677, and was an active member with St. Ludmila Parish.

Jim is survived by his wife, Laura of Cedar Rapids; children, Brian Spicer (Donna Martin) of Decatur, Illinois, Ashley Spicer (Brent Zacharias) of Cedar Rapids; parents, Mary Ann Hustad and Gene Spicer both of Pipestone, Minnesota; siblings, Val Carmody and Melissa Spicer (Doug Ruiter) all of Pipestone, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.
